Yaks are a specially adapted species of the cattle family. Yaks are found in the Himalayan mountains in Central Asia. They are specially adapted to extremes of heat and cold, and also low oxygen levels at high altitudes. Domestic yak like our Bowmanville Zoo yak are very common and there are 12 million roaming the steppe and mountain ranges of Mongolia, China, Tibet and Nepal. The wild yak, however, is very much endangered and survives in tiny numbers only in remote mountainous areas.
Currently the Bowmanville Zoo has a group of exotic cattle including one yak.
