Reindeer are the most Northerly deer species in the world, found near the arctic circle. Their habitat is the tundra, with a few herds living in woodland or mountainous areas as well. Reindeer are domestic species and have been herded by humans for the last 3,000 years. There are 2.5 million domestic reindeer kept in nine countries across the world .
Wild reindeer are called Caribou, and there are about five million caribou living in Canada and Alaska today. Global warming, however, is causing a huge decrease in numbers every year. You can help them and their habitat survive by reducing your carbon footprint.
Currently Bowmanville Zoo has a group of 9 reindeer.
