Physical and Behavioural Observations

Students fill out:

  1. behaviour observation sheet on 3 different types of animals
  2. must include writing & illustration
  3. extension – write behavioural observation sheet on a fellow classmate or other human to compare with animal

School time:

  1. students should discuss and practices writing observations prior to zoo exercise so that they feel comfortable on the day
  2. students should brainstorm physical and behavioural characteristics that they may observe
  3. students should discuss difference between writing something they see and writing something the think the animal is doing (empirical observation i.e. the lion yawned, not the lion is tired so he yawned)
  4. inferences can be made, from the observations, afterward in a journal piece, creative writing piece or a factual report

Science Curriculum

Gr. 2 Life Systems – Overall

– investigate physical and behavioural characteristics…of different types of animals
Gr. 4 Life Systems – Overall
– demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of habitat and community, (modify instructions to include habitat or environment, i.e. observations of physical interaction of tiger with his enclosure, or modify instructions to community behaviours of animal groups, i.e. observations that include the 2 lionesses or interactions between 2 lemurs, 2 gibbons or 2 zebras…)
– identify the factors that could affect the interrelationships of the animals living in a specific habitat (i.e. further writing assignment could include factors that induce change like a new animal added/removed or new objects/toys/enrichment added/removed)

Gr. 5 Life Systems – Overall

– investigate the structure and function of the major organs of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory and nervous systems  (observation sheet, record all functions that relate to the major organs, follow up writing exercise relating observable actions with organ functions inside the body…) (Obs. Sheet)

Gr. 6 Life Systems – Overall

– describe ways in which classification systems can be used in everyday life (obs. sheet)

Language Curriculum
Gr.2 Writing – Overall
– communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for specific purposes (e.g. write a paragraph describing a trip to the farm for classmates)
– revise and edit written work, focusing on specific features (e.g. sequence of ideas), with assistance from the teacher; (Inferences task)
–  use correctly the conventions specified for this grade level

Gr.2 Oral – Overall

– listen to discussions on familiar topics and ask relevant questions
– apply the rules of participating in a conversation and working with others

Gr.3 Writing – Overall

– write materials that show a growing ability to express their points of view and to reflect on their own experiences (Poetry Assignment from Observations)
– produce pieces of writing using a variety of forms (i.e. Poetry)
