News at the Zoo

Students write:

  1. a press release, newsletter, paper article, (EXTENSION – radio or tv script), about an animal or event at the zoo
  2. research at the zoo (who, what, where, when, why & how)
  3. important info. on animal stats can be found in the signs on enclosures
  4. Press release should demonstrate understanding of specific issues and characteristics as outlined in the curriculum expectations
  5. EXTENSION – add photos, either taken by students or found on the web, to enhance article
  6. Best examples could be published and posted at the zoo restaurant

Science Curriculum
Gr.4 Life Systems – Overall
– Investigate the dependency of animals on their habitat and the interrelationships of the animals living in a specific habitat
– describe ways in which humans can change habitats and the effects of these changes on the animals within the habitats
Gr.5 Life Systems – Overall
– demonstrate understanding of factors that contribute to good health
Gr.6 Life Systems – Overall
– describe ways in which classification systems can be used in everyday life

Language Curriculum

Gr.4 Writing – Overall
– communicate ideas and information for a variety of purposes and to specific audiences
– begin to write for more complex purposes
– organize and develop ideas using paragraphs (Who, what, were, when, why, how…)
– produce pieces of writing using a variety of specific forms,(Expectations for extension – and materials from other media to enhance their writing; – produce media texts using writing and materials from other media;
Gr.5 Writing – Overall
– communicate ideas and information for a variety of purposes and to specific audiences
– use writing for various purposes and in a range of contexts
– organize information to convey a central idea, using well-developed paragraphs that focus on a main idea and give some relevant supporting details
– produce pieces of writing using a variety of forms, narrative techniques, (Extension – and materials from other media, i.e. illustrations; – produce media texts using writing and materials from other media, e.g. and advertisement for radio or television;

Gr.6 Writing – Overall
– communicate ideas and information for a variety of purposes (to inform, to persuade, to explain) and to specific audiences
– use writing for various purposes and in a range of contexts,
– organize information to convey a central idea, using well-linked paragraphs
– produce pieces of writing using a variety of forms, techniques and resources appropriate to the form and purpose, and materials from other media (at this age they should include pics from the web or taken by student)
– (Extension – produce media texts using writing and materials from other media (i.e. creating a piece for radio/TV/webpage…)
