Life Systems – Focusing on Animals

Grade 5 – Human Organ Systems
(relate human organ systems to different animal systems, i.e. snakes are so similar in that they share our main systems and yet so different in appearance…)

  1. Focus on 5 major organ systems – respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory, nervous system.
  2. Location, functions and interactions of organs within specific systems.
  3. Structure of organs – all living tissues are composed of different kinds of cells.
  4. Understanding the importance of proper nutrition and exercise to healthy functioning of organ systems. (link to Health and Phys. Ed. and zoo routines)

 

Overall Expectations:

  1. Understanding the structure and function of the 5 major organ systems.
  2. Understanding the interactions of those 5 organs within each system.
  3. Structure and function of the 5 organ systems.
  4. Understanding factors that contribute to good health.

IDEAS/ACTIVITIES

Science/Math
1.  Write a comparison chart of animal needs and human needs for healthy living (using zoo Data Collection sheets and extend with News at the Zoo – Nutrition topic).
